With over 300 days of sunshine per year, hot summers, and a dry climate, the Okanagan Valley is one of Canada’s best fruit growing regions. While Kelowna, British Columbia is now best known for wine and restaurants, our growing conditions first attracted orchardists to the region who grew a variety of fruits, berries, and vegetables throughout the Okanagan Valley.

Fruit stands in Kelowna and the Okanagan Valley open for season at the end of June or early July (strawberries, cherries, blueberries), and close for the season in late October (apples, gourds).

Most of Kelowna’s agricultural output takes place in the summer and fall.

Cherry picking season in Kelowna begins at the end of June or early July. Cherries first ripen in the South Okanagan where temperatures are hotter (usually early July), and last in the North Okanagan where the climate is cooler (usually late July).

Function Junction Fruit Stand

Located off Rock Creek Highway (Hwy 33) in the Toovey Heights area of Rutland, Function Junction is a great place to pick up strawberries by the flat, lapin cherries, or do some apple cider tasting. Their fruit is grown on site and sold at highly competitive prices.

Located on Benvoulin Rd in South Kelowna, Don-O-Ray Farms is a local produce market and farm experience that’s great for families with youngsters. Their produce market sells fruits and veggies - and delicious prepared foods like fresh pressed fruit juices (apple, carrot, cherry, pear), fresh pies, hot sauces, and freezer jams.

Don-O-Ray Farm Adventure is a petting zoo and maze where your kids can pet and feed goats, a pony, bunnies, and ducks. You can get airbrush tattoos that last up to a week, and experience navigating through their fenced “hedge maze.”

If you’re looking for an Okanagan cherry picking experience, Kempf Orchards is a U-pick orchard where you purchase a box and pick your own cherries, including stella (red) and rainier (golden yellow) from $4.50 to $6 per pound. Note that July is the best time to visit for cherry picking in the Okanagan Valley.

The Kelowna Farmer’s and Crafter’s Market - open every Wednesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm - hosts a variety of farm produce stands, food vendors, concessions, crafters, and artisans. There’s live music, freshly-baked bread, hot salsas, boutique coffee roasters, and live musicians for a full sensory experience. The Kelowna Farmers and Crafters Market is located on the corner of Dilworth and Springfield. Park at the Orchard Park shopping mall, then use the crosswalk to safely get across this busy intersection. The Kelowna Farmers Market is also open through the winter months inside the Parkinson Recreation Centre.

Located on Camp Rd and Seaton Rd in Lake Country, Duggan Farms is one of the best U pick orchards and berry fields in Kelowna. The ever-helpful Mr. Duggan grows delicious strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, plums, peaches, nectarines, asparagus, and more.

Located along the east side of Wood Lake, Sproule and Daughters Farm opens their organic fruit stand during the summer harvest months (July-August) with delicious peaches and cherries for sale.
